FMA 057: Johannes Schöbinger & Jonas Roem (Rising Anger)

Johannes Schöbinger & Jonas Roem (Rising Anger)
I caught RISING ANGER at their release show for their EP “Of Fights & Lights“.
Almost 5 years ago I supported them with my old band in the same venue. Well, my band parted ways and RISING ANGER went on to sell it out. #Lifelines

Luckily, their ways didn’t change since then.  Johannes invited me to grab a water or two after the interview.

Interestingly, it turned out that Yanni of DREIMILLIONEN was their merch guy that night  – not big of surprise actually:  Yanni is featured on RISING ANGER’s new EP (“Most Demanded Dream”).

DREIMILLIONEN is another project of Jonas. Of course I tried to convince them as well to join my project but for different reasons it was not supposed to happen that night. Regardless of these circumstances they granted me a free ticket for their next show around.

The best RISING ANGER-pun still is “Rice in anger”.

FMA 056: Lucas Moscardini & Ed Garcia (Vitalism)

Lucas Moscardini & Ed Garcia (Vitalism)
VITALISM were one of the last bands and the only Brazilian band I interviewed for this project.

I caught them on their first trip to Europe. Their run, beside Frankfurt, also included a show in the Netherlands and UK Tech Fest in Newark-on-Trent. On all occasions they shared a stage with Frankfurt local heroes THE GREEN RIVER BURIAL, which by now unfortunately have departed as a band.

Check Lucas’ and Ed’s shred-skills on YouTube.

FMA 055: Markus K. (Still Ill)

Markus K. (Still Ill)
STILL ILL, yet another band I had never heard of before I attended their show; an Sunday matinee with 5 other bands, which meant that roundabout 35 people gathered in front of the venue. Finding Waldo – Real Life Edition.

Markus is also the head of Between The Lines Fanzine what I actually just found out as he talked about it during the video. A couple of weeks after the interview I dropped Markus a line if they might needed an additional writer. Fortunately, they did and now, from time to time, I’m chipping in a couple of contributions here and there.

Check STILL ILL's video for "The Greater Fool".

FMA 054: Terry Jeanmart (Evening Call)

If it comes to size in square meters Belgium doesn’t rank among the Top 5 on this planet. So I thought to myself that the Belgian Hardcore scene would be some kind of familial and assessable. But all the other Belgian bands that I asked about EVENING CALL had never heard of them. Apparently, even in (logistically) small scenes you can never find out about everyone.

Terry Jeanmart (Evening Call)
When I arrived at the venue EVENING CALL had unfortunately already finished their set.
I asked my way around the venue until somebody explained me where to find the backstage area. As I entered the band members where checking out some music videos of… I guess…
I cannot remember...
I suppose it was one of NASTY or WOLFxDOWN. (This information is subject to change and supplied without liability.)

As Terry decided to help me out I had to ask the other guys for some background silence. One of them – I can’t remember who exactly did it – sat down in front of the backstage room to hinder anyone from entering and disrupting us. What a gesture!

One thing for sure became more and more crystal clear during this project: Belgian people and bands are one of the most fun to talk to and work with. And here it doesn’t matter if they’re from Wallonia, Flanders or Brussels.

Check out their latest EP “Restore”.

FMA 053: Hannes Markisch & Georg Cotta (Empty Handed)

Hannes Markisch & Georg Cotta (Empty Handed)

Mhmhmh…

I felt as if I had read that name way more often a couple of years ago. Recently, I had not heard so much about them and was quiet surprised that they gathered more than 10.000 Facebook-Likes.
Nonetheless, the shooting went pretty smoothly.

EMPTY HANDED are based in Leipzig. So I asked them after the video shooting what it is like to share the hometown with Impericon. I wondered in how far they may support bands from that area. But Hannes honestly replied that this coincidence hasn’t had any effect on his band. Still there is a vital music scene in and around Leipzig. Bands from that area that you should give a listen to - according to Hannes and Georg - are MILES& FEET and ANNISOKAY.

Furthermore, I ran into Markus of Sio Motion that day.

FMA 052: Tom Janssens & Jens Houbishpek (Escape)

Actually I didn’t intend to interview ESCAPE but as I waited outside and the bands I actually waited for got stuck at the airport I decided to it with them. To kill time and stock pile my interview roster.

All started outside the venue where Jens asked me if it’s okay to smoke weed in public in Germany. He went on telling me about the drug problem in his hometown of Tongeren, Belgium. Marijuana is cultivated in Belgium and then exported to the Netherlands. This trafficking route comes through Tongeren.

Further Jens told me that he once was supposed to fill in for xDavyx of xVICIOUSx.
Jens is also familiar with ASHES, another Belgium band you’ll sooner or later see at FMA.
Tom Janssens & Jens Houbishpek (Escape)
Not so funny fun fact 1:
We had to re-shoot the video interview again because while filming a weird elderly person loudly talked about PCs he used back in 1984.

Not so funny fun fact 2:
There was an anecdote why Jens chose “Houbishpek” as last name, which is not his real last name. It had something to do with bacon (in Dutch “spek”). But unfortunately I’ve forgotten it. I think it was about bands, breakfast and bacon…

FMA 051: Mario Prause & Mike Göde (Punishable Act)

Mario Prause & Mike Göde  (Punishable Act)
Do you remember my friend Bodo? The one organizing the cancer benefit? He called me a couple of weeks before his festival ad asked me if I wanted to do some interviews with bands that would play at Mosh gegen Krebs 4. Since I never look a gift horse in the mouth I replied “Yes.”

PUNISHABLE ACT was one of a few bands I asked for.

On festival day Bodo took me backstage and introduced me.
As I approached them they were about to hit back to Berlin since Mike’s parents were in the hospital at that time. But luckily, they still had that 15 minutes it would take to introduce my topic and shoot the video.

Afterwards, I expressed the life cycle I felt during the interview. PUNISHABLE ACT started as a band when I was only 3 years old. Now I’m here and they contributed to my project. Somehow surreal.
